Quotes for Starting Your Health and Wellness Journey

The hardest part of any journey is taking that first step. As a health and wellness coach, I spent a good amount of time with my clients discussing their “why.” Why is being in good health important to you? And also, what does “good health” mean to you?

Once you have a powerful reason behind trying to create a healthy life, you’ll find that the first step isn’t so daunting after all.

Here are some quotes to get those wheels turning.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” – Lao Tzu

If you take things one step at a time this helps take some of the pressure off. You don’t need to change all of your habits, all at once.

Starting with something as simple as walking for 10 minutes during your lunch break can create a snowball effect. Or even drinking 1 glass of water at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

“You can’t control everything in your life, but you can control what you put into your body.” – Unknown

There are so many things in life that we can’t control. Taking care of your body is one step you can take to feel empowered.

“Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford

To change your life, you need to change your daily habits. Your mindset plays a huge role in this. Creating a healthy lifestyle is tough, especially if you’re trying to do a lot of new things at once. Starting small can build up your confidence so that you feel as though you can do it.

“Wellness encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit. Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.” – Laurette Gagnon Beaulieu

I love this quote because it’s a reminder that there’s no rush. You don’t need to immediately start going to the gym 6 days a week or run a 10k. Unless you really enjoy those types of physical fitness challenges. Creating healthy habits should be a fun, energizing process.

And don’t forget to also take care of your mental health needs. You can start with a good self-care routine.

Self-care can be as simple or as extravagant as you want it to be. You can have a nice soak in the tub after you put the kids to bed. Or take yourself on a coffee date on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Quotes for Overcoming Challenges

While you’re working towards building a healthy body, it’s not always going to be smooth sailing. We all struggle along our health journeys at some point. Remember that you are stronger than you think.

A positive mindset can help you get through life’s daily struggles. These next few quotes can help you remain calm and develop a healthy attitude towards the challenges you’ll face.

“You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true.” – Richard Bach

Whether that struggle is with your physical health or your mental health, you have the strength to overcome it. Reach out for help if you need it, either a trusted friend, family member, or even a therapist.

“Growth is not steady…It is instead a switchback trail; three steps forward, two back…before another forward leap.” – Dorothy Corkville Briggs

This quote reminds you that it’s okay to not always be making progress, especially if you’re on a weight loss journey.

You’re trying to create healthy habits that will last for a lifetime. That is incredibly difficult in today’s world. If you stumble along the way, give yourself some grace. You’re still here. And you’re still working towards a healthy lifestyle.

If you need some extra support, partnering with a weight loss coach or a certified health and wellness coach might be the best move for you.

“Goals are dreams with deadlines.” – Diana Scharf Hunt

When you run into a roadblock along your health and wellness journey, remember why you started in the first place.

Keeping your body healthy is important to you. Maybe you started this journey because you’re dreaming of being able to complete a 5k. Or maybe you want to show your kids that healthy eating can be fun and delicious. Either way, you have a date in mind for when you want to achieve these goals.

Picture yourself living your dream, then keep going.

“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Healthy living is challenging, especially when you’re trying to keep up with life’s demands. Some stressors in life you can’t get rid of. But you can learn how to deal with them in a healthier way, such as deep breathing or practicing self-care on a daily basis.

Quotes for Everyday Motivation

These quotes are great for when you’re really dragging. For those days when you’re so tired that it feels like a Thursday but it’s only Tuesday.

“Take care of your body; it’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn

This quote serves as a gentle reminder that making healthy choices will benefit you in the long run.

“The key to a healthy life is having a healthy mind.” – Richard Davidson

Thankfully, mental health has taken center stage in recent years. It’s no longer swept under the rug as something that isn’t all that important. People are starting to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health.

What helps relieve stress for you? A solo walk in the park? Relaxing at home with a good book? Schedule some stress-free moments throughout your day. Ask for support when you need it. After all, you need a healthy mind in order to keep a healthy body.

“A healthy lifestyle is the most potent medicine at your disposal.” – Sravani Saha Nakhro

Keeping your body healthy is a sum of all the choices you make everyday. Choosing to work on your physical fitness and follow a healthy diet are the best preventative measures you can take.

By the way, we’re not fans of diet culture over here. When I use the word “diet”, I just mean the food and drinks that you choose for yourself (not a restrictive pattern of eating).

“The mind can go in a thousand directions, but on this beautiful path, I walk in peace.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

A huge part of your well-being involves keeping a healthy mind. On those days where you’re exhausted, give yourself peace.

If you tend to be an over-thinker, worrying about getting to the gym, making a healthy dinner, and a million other things, staying in the present moment can help keep you calm. When you’re feeling stressed, take a break. Then you can restart your health journey with renewed energy.

How to Use Health and Wellness Quotes in Your Daily Life

As a health and wellness coach, I’ve worked with dozens of clients who struggled to keep up with their new healthy lifestyles. Although my job as a health coach is to provide support, I can’t be there with my clients as they go through all of life’s challenges.

These quotes can help get you through those tough times. They can give you the confidence boost you need to support your mental wellness.

During my coaching sessions, I would ask my clients to brainstorm some ways to keep these quotes close by. Brainstorming helped my clients come up with ways that would fit into their unique lives. Here’s what worked for some people.

  • Write the quote on a sticky note.

  • Post it on your bathroom mirror, by your front door, or anywhere you find helpful.
  • Write it in a Pinterest or Instagram post to share with family and/or friends.

  • Repeat it while you practice deep breathing exercises.

  • Write it in your journal at the end of a particularly hard day.

Find a quote that really resonates with you. It can help get you through those tough moments so you can keep pushing.

Quotes I Live By As a Health and Wellness Coach

My favorite quote is one that I’m sure most of you have heard already: “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” Although there’s some debate over whether or not it was actually Hippocrates who said that, his philosophy certainly knew the power of healthy food.

Originally, I wanted to be a dietitian so that I could help people discover the difference that healthy food could make in their lives. But, as is usually the case, life led me down a different path. After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition, I was feeling a bit lost.

I knew that I didn’t want to be a dietitian anymore. But I had no idea what I wanted to do. So I just starting Googling health and wellness careers that more or less fit my degree.

That’s when I came across health and wellness coaching. It sounded like the perfect choice for me. As a health coach, I have so many more tools at my disposal to help my clients. Emotional well-being, sleep, and physical activity wouldn’t have been in my wheelhouse if I had decided to become a dietitian.

As it turns out, I love being a health and wellness coach. You get to know people through their goals and dreams, and through their struggles. It feels like I’m in a better position to help people change their lives as a health coach, not as a dietitian.

As I coach my clients, nutrition is still at the base of my passion. Following a healthy diet clears your mind and your spirit. You can’t force your way to a healthy body. Every time you decide to eat or drink something healthy, you’re making a decision to love yourself.

Another quote I live by is “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” – Goethe.

As we work our way to better health, taking the first step is usually the hardest part. But once you get the ball rolling, you’ll find that eventually things get easier.

With any big changes in life, starting small can help boost your confidence. You’ll start to get those little “light bulb” moments where you realize that you have the power to change your life.
